CARMAN, Man. – Manitoba’s Prairie Rose School Division is reviewing its transportation policy after the driver of a chartered bus carrying 45 students was ticketed for speeding in bad weather.

Superintendent Terry Osiowy says the Grade 5 and 6 students from St. Francois Xavier School southwest of Winnipeg were on a ski trip Monday when the bus was pulled over by RCMP. He says when a school decides to charter a bus it expects that traffic laws will be followed.

RCMP say the bus was travelling at 117 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on Highway 16.

The driver was also ticketed for imprudent driving.

Cpl. Julie Couchaine says visibility and road conditions were poor with snow and icy patches.

“Just wanted to emphasize that speeding is one of the highest contributing factors when it comes to road fatalities,” she said Wednesday. “The safety of the children was a priority for the officer.”

Beaver Bus Lines, the company that operates the charter bus, said it would look into what happened.
